Pat Baldwin, Startforth.

"Dear Graham and Mathew

Ruth and I just wanted to let you know how delighted we are with the work you recently carried out.  The window reveals, sills and architrave look fantastic and make a huge difference to the appearance of all the rooms.  Trying to find skilled tradesmen who are reliable, conscientious, extremely capable, and who clearly take a real pride in their work, is, in our experience, a real challenge.  We are happy to say that in this instance Atkinsons ticked all the boxes, and we would not hesitate in having you undertake further work for us in the future or recommending you to friends and family.

With Thanks and best wishes."

Ruth and Peter Shield,  Copley.

"Since moving to Durham in 2002, to a Georgian house needing substantial renovation, Atkinsons have done a lot of work for us. They produce excellent quality joinery and a bespoke service second to none.  It is a bonus having them locally. I have particularly enjoyed working with Atkinsons, a family owned and run business with traditional values.  All the staff have a pleasant attitude on site.  As a result of their contribution to the project we won an award from the Georgian Group in 2008 for the 'Renovation of a Georgian Country House"

Mr and Mrs Paul Townley,  Barnard Castle.

'This is the best company for bespoke joinery I've ever found and would recommend them without reservation. As a small team they are helpful, knowledgeable and will make up any size or design you want. They fully understand the needs of historic houses in conservation areas and are really friendly and obliging - they remember your name and details of your order - a really personal and professional service.'

Louise Westmarland, Gainford

'I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the work in my home which was finished to a very high standard. I was overjoyed at the prompt service and also how tidy you work! I cannot recommend your firm highly enough. Thank you.'

'Many thanks for doing the work and cheaper than I expected.'

G Scrafton, Bowes

'Atkinsons Joiners were recommended to me years ago by a satisfied customer and I have used them ever since. They are unfailingly helpful. They explain the options clearly, giving sensible advice about advantages, prices etc. They turn up promptly as arranged, work well and cheerfully, keep in touch about any problems thrown up as the job progresses, and always leave the place tidy. I have always been totally satisfied with the finished work. I have used them for a very wide range of jobs, some quite complicated, over the last twenty years and I recommend them unreservedly.'

Anne Warren, Barnard Castle

'I have over a number of years renovated my home with Atkinsons Joiners carrying out the majority of the work which included the conversion of the loft to an en-suite dormer bedroom, making and fitting a new stair case to blend in with the existing stair case, supplying and fitting windows, external and internal doors, skirting boards, back mould, door furniture and repairing or making good existing flooring where necessary. The advise when asked for was based on their many years of experience and was invaluable when taking on such a project. The joiners themselves were highly skilled and pleasant tradesmen to have in my home. I have no hesitation in recommending Atkinsons Joiners and would be happy and indeed plan to use them again in the future.'

Richard Browning, Barnard Castle

'Excellent work. Smartly done, tidy and fast. I’m very pleased.'

Richard Clayton, Barnard Castle

In 1956 Stan Atkinson left school to start work as an apprentice joiner for George Browning's joinery business at Coach & Horses Yard in Barnard Castle. He served his time alongside his mentor, and friend to this day Ray Davenport.

In 1966 he purchased the business from George, and the name of Atkinsons Joiners was born.

Working mainly in Barnard Castle and the surrounding area of Teesdale, he rapidly built up a good reputation for quality workmanship.

In the mid 1980s his two sons Tony & Graeme left school and started their apprenticeships alongside their father and his employees.

The company went Limited in 2005 and in 2010 moved out of Coach & Horses Yard into a new purpose-built workshop on Montalbo Road.

With the greater workspace we are now able to take on larger projects that were not possible before.

In 2008 our apprentice Craig Dominick won the regional Skill Build competition and went on to compete in the national final in Birmingham.

In 2016 our latest apprentice Mathew Brookes also won the regional Skill Build competition, and the following year he got runner up and Highly Comended in the Federation of Master Builders Apprentice of the Year, Northern Counties section.

Up to now Atkinsons Joiners have trained ten apprentices in the traditional way, giving young people the chance given to Stan by George Brownng. (pictured below)

We are a small, friendly family run company serving Teesdale and the surrounding areas, manufacturing high quality purpose-made joinery products for both historic and modern properties in hardwood, softwood and MDF in our modern, spacious workshop.

We supply and install a vast range of joinery products for both commercial and residential properties.

Our range includes doors, windows, bookcases, staircases, skirting boards, architrave, dado and picture rails, moulded by ourselves to match original patterns.

Over the years we have done a wide range of work, in a variety of different timbers, from refurbishing vintage farm implements, to making one off bespoke items designed by the client.

As we are located in a Conservation Area a large amount of our work is on listed buildings where we have to replicate original joinery products so we have great experience and knowledge in producing a varied array of doorframes, doors, windows and mouldings of all designs and sizes.
